In fifty years of photography I never held a camera by the lens and let it slip 
through my hand. Don't think I ever held a camera by the lens. Not a good idea. 
Frankly, I'm surprised at how casual some photographers are in regard to the 
way they hold their equipment. I never hold a camera without at least the 
security of a hand-grip strap, and I frequently have it hanging from my neck. 
Haven't dropped one in at least forty years. (Knock on wood:-).
