Sorry, P.J., I think you failed in that endeavour. You must also include the carbon locked in minerals, if you want to be pedantic. Your problem then, is that you find that nearly all molecules on the planet contain some amounts of carbon. It's also one of the most abundant elements in the Earth's crust. It's like Dan pointed at early on in this thread. These concepts are too big to fit into most people's minds. One needs to be a scientist specialising in the field to take it all in.
