The one thing that I'm having trouble with is confirming that the camera is on
channel 2.

I have a vague recollection of having done so when I got the camera, and the
Pentax book only said to mount the flash to the camera to set the wireless
mode. Bourke's book doesn't say anything about it.

Done.

Done

Custom 3, item 21, set to 2

Done with the MCS switch at the bottom of the flash.

Which is what I wanted.

John asked:

Are you sure the 540 was fully charged when you tried to trigger it?

Did you make sure it wasn't set to "Contrast Control Sync"?

If you mean by fully charged, red light on, on the back, yes I did.
What do you mean set to Contrast Control Sync? How is that set? Or checked?

That is one of my biggest gripes with the 540.

Dario, the on switch was set to wireless, I also tried the modeling light
switch in both positions.

John, it sounds like your experiments with the 540 echo mine.
