Larry,
I haven't played much with the wireless flash myself. But let me share what settings I can think about. I hope you did it, but just in case (I refer to K-7, but expect that K-5 has it done very similarly): You want to set the camera flash setting (dial button down) to W-flash. Then you also set in the C5 Custom Setting menu - Built-in Flash Discharge Method (On=Master, Off= control flash) Set the remote flash to the "slave" mode. Based on you description, I think you did all that. According to the manual, for the external flash directly connected to the camera, "Control" means that "The flash directly connected to the camera is discharged as a control flash only and does not discharge as main flash." I expect that the same applies to the built-in one. Then, I think this is consistent with what you described, - the built-in not firing when set to the "control" mode. The 540 firing on the preflash, - that sounds like either it is in a wrong mode or there is a problem in the communication between the two. The manual suggests to check /set the channel on both units, - I hope you've done that. I cannot think of anything else. >From what I can tell, not that many actively writing PDMLers are using flash, especially P-TTL (and hence even fewer in the wireless mode). Jostein is one of them, and I believe he used his flashes in the multi-flash setting, - so he might be able to help you. Good luck! I didn't quite like the fact that 540 wouldn't stay in the M mode for the regular single-flash operation (very different from the 500). I was having an expected amount of difficulty, when I tried to set the pop up to control, rather than master, and all it would do is fire the 540 as preflash, but wouldn't actually fire the 540 for the shot. Except for once, right after power up. Also, even in slave mode, the 540, which I can never get to stay in M on the camera, would only go into M or A in wireless, and would never work as wireless P-TTL. I did RTFM, Page 192 of the K-5 manual If I Recall Correctly. I'm sure that there is something simple, that I'm missing, but I'm missing it. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List [email protected] http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
