OK, I understand now.  They also call it contrast control when you dial it down 
on the flash menu.

I double checked the 540 manual.  I'm still not having any luck.

Is there anyone with a K-5 and a 540 who could test if they can get the 540 to 
work as a wireless slave off of the K-5 pop-up?

I just tried this on my K-x. When I set it to wireless in the flash menu, it 
said "wireless, ch2" when I changed the flash to ch 1, it tracked.  The camera 
LCD display shows ch 1, but not the color display on the back.

I just tried to use the K-x as a wireless controller with it's popup flash, and 
it isn't working.  I wonder if my 540 is broken, for the fourth time?  The 
AF540 really does seem to be an unmitigated piece of shit.
