In the discuss forum at http://www.photozone.de - I've seen reports from MZ-S users
that the 2.5 fps
rate is an understatement. It seems like the MZ-S can go up to 4 - 4.5 fps with fresh
lithium
batteries in the optional battery pack/handgrip.
Pentax may not have so much to show at PMA - last year PMA and the PMA before it
and the PMA even
before that - were all quite uninteresting from a Pentax 35mm SLR perspective. I
suspect that Pentax
waits for the Photokina.
We must not forget that Pentax is a small company, and as such they're more limited
than the big
three. With this in memory, I feel that Pentax has showed and released an impressively
amount of new
products the last 12 months. MZ-S with 24-90, AF360FGZ, 28-105 f/3.2-4.5, 31 Limited,
645NII, MZ-6
with new lens 28-90, MZ-60.
MZ-60 may feel like a disapointment, but do remember that if Pentax can't reach the
entry-level
customers, they're loosing market. MZ-60 is a way for Pentax to extend the userbase by
getting new
users. More users means more accessories and lenses available.
MZ-6 was a needed update of the MZ-7. Things happens very fast in the entry-level
segment and
Pentax needs to be alert and active here. The release of the MZ-6 does not mean that
they won't be an
update of the MZ-3/5n. In fact, now that the beginner segment is fully updated, it's
now time for
Pentax to concentrate on the middle segment. If it will be a MZ-6 with some new
functions and the
viewfinder from the MZ-3/5n - or a stripped-down MZ-S - I don't know. But it might be
ready for
Photokina.
I also believe that the new digital SLR will see the light of day at Photokina.
The Optio range is successful - even here in Sweden. Pentax Scandinavia has signed a
deal with one of
Swedens largest distributors to computer stores (Computer 2000). The Optio range is
already available
at many computer stores, with more to follow thank's to this deal. It's the most sold
digital compact
in it's price range at the swedish internet store Cyberphoto. Simply because Canon
Ixus digital cost
the same, and offers only 2x zoom and lower resolution.

Best regards,
Roland
