Well, golly. I really should read my equipment manuals sometime.
It appears that my Metz 58 AF-1 has a Spot-beam mode.

I remember reading somewhere that the AF240FT had a more powerful spot
beam than the more modern Pentax flashes. Not sure how it compares to
my Metz. I suppose some testing is in order.

One interesting point with regard to AF Assist with spot-beam is that
it will allow for AF even on featureless objects, like a white wall
(for example). (low light isn't the only reason that AF can have
difficulties). Something worth keeping in mind.

This is on my mind because shooting indoors at my daughter's
graduation this past Friday I experienced the frustration of the image
going way out of focus right when I wanted to take the shot. This
frustrating problem will not be unfamiliar to you, I trust. I often
want to avoid the harsh light/shadows of flash but would like to be
able to have accurate AF in less than bright light.
