Well, golly. I really should read my equipment manuals sometime. It appears that my Metz 58 AF-1 has a Spot-beam mode.
I remember reading somewhere that the AF240FT had a more powerful spot beam than the more modern Pentax flashes. Not sure how it compares to my Metz. I suppose some testing is in order. One interesting point with regard to AF Assist with spot-beam is that it will allow for AF even on featureless objects, like a white wall (for example). (low light isn't the only reason that AF can have difficulties). Something worth keeping in mind. This is on my mind because shooting indoors at my daughter's graduation this past Friday I experienced the frustration of the image going way out of focus right when I wanted to take the shot. This frustrating problem will not be unfamiliar to you, I trust. I often want to avoid the harsh light/shadows of flash but would like to be able to have accurate AF in less than bright light.
