Well, Bob, that's why I called it a miscalculation rather than a mistake. Yes, they did want third-parties to easily be able to produce compatible products for use with the IBM PC product line quickly and easily (for that time). But they "opened their kimono" much too wide and too cheaply, and ended up with people cloning the base product. I've worked with other companies who have similar motives over the years. Many of them learned the lesson. You can get information just as detailed, but you have to enter into a contract with them to get access to it. It's not just out there for anybody with a couple of hundred bucks.
