Rather than their loving thistle "down", they feast on thistle seeds (nyjer)
and absolutely swarm around the feeder at times. They are so fidgety they're
difficult to count, but have estimated from 35 to 40 at a time. Nyjer is
expensive, so will be ready when winter sets in and they migrate...wherever. ;)

Thanks, Cotty, and thanks to everyone else who looked, enjoyed and commmented.

As I said, I've been waiting over a year for this one.  ;-)  They seem
to love thistle down and I remember last summer they feasted on it and
then all of a sudden in either late August or early September, they
were gone!  I guess they flew south but there was no warning that they
were leaving - I just showed up one weekend day and there was not a
trace of the little guys.  There were lots of them feasting this past
weekend so I guess they're fattening up for the journey.  They'll
likely be gone soon, for another year.  Glad I got this one!

cheers,
frank
