I rather doubt that.  If a 200/f2.8 can be made with a 72mm front
element, I'd expect a 100mm/1.7 to be possible at something smaller
than that - possibly even sharing the same filter thread as the
50-135/f2.8.

The A*200/f2.8, FA*200/f2.8 & DA*200/f2.8 all have 77mm front filter. As did the A*135/f1.8.
