Before I got an extra large duffel bag from a camping store, I used to steal the bags that our folding chairs live in, so your idea is sound and has been proven in the field, Jeffrey. They are good for one stand and umbrella plus a few doodads. They come with a great shoulder handle and tie easily at the top.

I do not have lighting stands nor umbrellas but I do have a tripod so not
sure this advice will be helpful. I have never played golf but would an old
golf bag work and how about reusing the bags that some of the canvas type
fold up chairs come in.

I have been in lurk mode of late and will go back to lurking again.

I'm cleaning up after photographing a friend's party last night. As often
happens, when it came time to leave, things got "put away" in a manner much
closer to expediency than organization. This means that I have to pretty
much unpack everything, and put it away where it belongs.
The good news is that I have put together a fairly decent sized collection
of lighting stands, tripods etc. Unfortunately, I don't really have a good
way of storing and transporting them. I've been carrying the lighting
stand, umbrellas etc. in a (very) large duffel, but that's not very
convenient when I'm at home. I'm curious whether anybody has come up with
some sort of a brilliantly handy (and cheap) way of storing and carrying
these things.
And for that matter, any other sort of camera gear beyond bodies and
lenses.
