I currently use a set of Manfrotto 055 legs with an 029 head. That's the pan-tilt head that takes those accursed hexagonal quick- release plates. It easily supports the Pentax 67 with a 300mm f/4 Takumar lens attached (which does not have a tripod shoe). It also has two spirit levels to help you get the camera straight. I don't know if Manfrotto has fixed the problems with the lack of grip between the tripod plate and the camera body; they used to use cork (they may as well have used Teflon) but changed to rubber a couple of years ago. With the cork, a heavy camera can twist around on the plate regardless of how tight you do up the screw. I don't know about the rubber as I haven't tried it. I wouldn't recommend a ball head for 6x7 work unless you kept the rig light and well balanced.
