i last researched this a few years ago, and i don't have any references at hand, but at the time there seemed to be consensus that Epson cooks the DMax numbers somehow and that the results aren't really comparable to film scanners; i have an Epson 4990 and i can get reasonable results from slides, but subjectively not as good as the Nikon LS-2000 CoolScan i had 10 years ago

Dmax is different, and potentially more important with negative film as the densest parts of a negative are where the subtle bright shades are found
