Nikon Scan is like lots of software from ~10 years ago - it is quirky and annoying to work with. The alternative - Vuescan - has an unfathomable interface, but is more stable.
i know what you mean, it took me a while to get used to Vuescan; it has gotten much better, though, since i started with it in 1999 (and i've gotten free updates since then); it is optimized for production scanning, and becomes very sensible once it sinks in; it works perfectly with the 8-slide frame that came with my Epson 4990, so i recently breezed through scanning about 400 slides my stepfather took in the 60s & 70s
