wisdom is that general-purpose flatbeds are poorer than dedicated film scanners 
due to optical limitations...


Of course, but in practice the best Epsons seem quite good. The 700 reportedly 
has two lenses. I don't know what that means exactly or how much of a 
difference it makes. In any case, the only film scanner that would be suitable 
would be one that accommodates medium format, and those are very expensive.
