OBTW, you didn't specify a prime lens. How about something like an older
28-70mm lens?

Indeed. The other alternative is 3rd party 28-70/2.8 fast zoom lenses
such as Tamron 28-75 or Sigma 24-60, both being relatively inexpensive
and pretty good optically.
My understanding (potentially incorrect, naturally) is that Mike is
looking for good value for his money. Thus are my suggestions.
