On 12/11/11, David Mann, discombobulated, unleashed:

>I seem to remember a guy offering a prize for any data recovery firm who
>could recover a drive that he'd wiped by simply zeroing it out in one
>pass. I'm too lazy to look it up, but last I heard there hadn't been
>any takers. Take that to mean whatever you like :)

I think the point about sticking nails through hard drive platters is
only realistic in terms of forensic recovery of criminal activity. For
recovery of only a small part of one hard drive, the time, effort and
expense is only really feasible by law enforcement in order to secure a
prosecution. That or if you know Steve Gates just sold a laptop on eBay
and you fancy your chances ;-)
