Like most other manufacturers in the world, except Leica, maybe even them too,
Pentax has found that the market will buy Chinese goods because they are cheap.
To go the elegant and beautiful tactile route would put them in the same league
as Leica, with similar prices, but no reputation in that demographic. They
would need to develop a much more powerful synchro ring gear to focus against
the drag of the old focusing racks. Perhaps instead a powerful clutch that
would disengage the manual focusing mechanism and allow the freedom to focus
with AF.

I think (haven't held or operated a Nikon or a Canon for 13 years) that Pentax
(Hoya/fill in the blank) is doing a very credible job of designing and selling
to the advanced amateur/beginning Pro/Ass-old collector market who want
competitive specs in a solid line of bodies and lenses that are affordable to
their demographic (see previous descriptive phrase).

You may hold on to your own thoughts and feelings about the Pentax chi if you
wish. But the vast majority of your fellow PDML'rs would have no other, for
whatever personal reason. Those few that spread their loyalty around to various
companies are welcome too, but are regarded as lesser beings. :-)

It's not that life is too short, it's that you're dead for so long......
