I started studying photography formally last year on a part time basis. It is a 
diploma course, not a full degree, but still a proper tertiary course. Most of 
the time I already know what is being taught but at least 20% of it is new and 
useful and things like art theory is entirely new to me (and yes, useful). The 
two most important things have been seeing other people's work every week (and 
listening to the thought processes behind it) and being properly introduced to 
the idea of shooting a folio of work. Trying to get 10 - 12 good shots on a 
common theme is quite challenging, especially when you have to articulate your 
theme.
