Absolutely agree, Mark. 
I continually wish I were able to view my stuff completely free of a mix of ego 
and insecurity. No one else can do that for you.

Ok, now serious answer:

I don't have nearly as much time as I'd like for photography at the
moment, but one thing I can do to improve my photography is train my
eye (and brain). One of my favorite ways of doing this is voting on
images in the Pentax Photo Gallery. It makes me think not only about
what I like but why I like it (or don't like it). It also emphasizes
the importance of originality and of how cliche can sneak into your
work without your realizing it.
