I bet the camera has some bit automatic circuitry that adjusts the input
level for external sources. Given the lack of importance video people
generally place in how the audio sounds (really tall Empire-types
excluded, of course), I wouldn't be surprised if that circuit was
designed by the copy boy during lunch.
I know that's not helping you with your problem.
Too bad the camera doesn't have a line-in jack; you could use an
external mic-pre and get some control over the level going in to the
camera and a headphone jack for monitoring what you're recording.
Of course, at this point, you're looking more like a pro video recording
guy than a still camera guy with video capability...
