I agree w/Paul. If you can calibrate the monitor get a match between monitor and print it doesn't make a lot of difference what tool you used to get there. I used a Spyder 2 with much success with both WinXP and Win7 using a relatively cheap ViewSonic monitor printing to an Epson R800.

I upgraded to a Spyder 3 just to get a faster calibration. The Spyder 2 now just sits on the shelf so if anyone is interested, 30 bucks + shipping takes it.

I think you can really overthink  this, but that's just my opinion. If your 
monitor calibration tool dials you in to the point where what you see on your 
screen is virtually the same as what your printer delivers, you're golden. I've 
been able to accomplish that with an old Spyder 2 Express and my Epson 2880. I 
suspect that one can do the same with most calibration tools.
