Heh. If I could expand the RAM in my 2008 iMac to 8 or 16 Gig RAM I
would. I regularly fill 4 Gig with just Lightroom and Photoshop on a
single K20D RAW image. You do some adjustments in Lr, then edit in Ps
and wham! the swapping starts. Granted I do more retouching than most
here.

Part of my normal workflow is quitting all open apps before starting
into retouching of the next image. Lr seems to have a memory leak.
I'm only using Photoshop, but I imagine running it and LR together could gobble up some serious memory. I usually run Thumbs Plus v8 to manage the files and Photoshop and leave it at that.
I can only just imagine the "fun" you are facing with your 6x7 scans.
Well, I upgraded from my old 4 gig dual core system to this one a year and a half ago mostly to tackle the 6x7 scans. This system can move through them much faster. Th eimages are rather a waste on the web since the detail is more or less gone at low resolutions, but they make nice large prints.
BTW: have you read the article "A Perfunctory Guide to Converting
Photographic Film to Digital Prints" by Ctein in The Online
Photographer? Good stuff.

I hadn't heard of it before but just took a look and book marked it - looks interesting! Thanks
