On my way to a friend's birthday party tonight I stopped by Fry's to try and
get a cable.
At Fry's it would have taken a $15 cable and two $15 adapters to get from micro
hdmi to DVI.

I've poked around a little bit on the net, and on my first pass search all of
the cables I found were shipped from China.

i would start (and probably end) my search at monoprice.com, which has a great variety of cables, usually at a good compromise between cheap and good; i suspect a lot of it is manufactured from China (which matters to me), but it is shipped from the US

Or picked up an inexpensive monitor that has hdmi inputs?

depending on your definition of inexpensive, a large proportion of the low-end LCD monitors currently available have HDMI inputs; shop the sales at something like dealnews.com to find one under $200; shop craigslist to find one under $100; choosing one that looks pretty good is another matter entirely

an advantage of even low-tech tethering versus an HDMI cable is that you can do more than just look at one image; for example Preview (on OS X 10.7 at least) has a multi-channel histogram display with which (subject to the limitations of the JPEG) one can get an even better sense of the exposure; one could be looking at that while changing the exposure for the next shot,
