Thanks, Pete, you have been very helpful.  I am looking for a lens
that I can use at meetings, dinners, family functions, and traveling,
so I can a wide view when I need it and still be able to focus quickly
at a somewhat greater distance without having to change lenses.

BTW, I enjoyed the images you included as examples.
