Presume you're talking about this video: http://nedbunnell.posterous.com/k-01-focus-peaking That's similar to focus assist mode 1 on the Ricoh GXR, and looks pretty similar as well to the Sony NEX focus peaking. It's a good system, works well. I can nail focus pretty easily using it with almost any lens, including a 15mm f/4.5. The GXR has an additional focus assist mode 2 which goes well beyond the mode 1: it applies a gray mask so that all you see is the peaking/edge contrasts against a grayed background. That allows me to nail critical focus in very poor light, low contrast situations easily, along with magnification of 2x, 4x or 8x (selectable on the fly). Just like using an optical reflex viewfinder or a rangefinder, manual focus with focus peaking is not a panacea. It requires that you learn what it does, what the camera's viewfinder is telling you, and use it with thought. It is remarkably easy to learn and a very visible focus indicator, and it operates very quickly and precisely... That's its strength over the many ambiguities of autofocus systems. -- Godfrey godfreydigiorgi.posterous.com -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List [email protected] http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
