I'm curious about what you thought of the workshop, Don. Do you feel
it was worthwhile? Was this your first such workshop and if so, did
it meet your preconceptions/expectations? If not, what did you like or
not like about it as compared to the others?

(Your description of "focus and snap" sounds like you were not
thrilled with your level of involvement.)

I have been to a class taught by John Shaw the outdoor photographer and learned a lot about exposure more or less the Ansel Adams system applied to digital. (Much of which I still struggle with relying too much on post)

I went to a camera club where Rick Sammon spoke. Lots of inspiration not much on technique.

Those were both lecture types and some Q&A. Shaw was a little off-putting and Rick couldn't wait to go out for a beer after. Rick was free. Shaw was $150 I think.

I would go to both again if it were convenient.

This class was a traveling circus funded by Sony and Popular Photography and billed as 1 day for beginners and 2nd day for intermediates. I figured I could test out of the 1st and opted for the 2nd day. The problem was the newbies all stayed for the intermediate day. That meant they were simplifying the tech and I did not get much new info.

The model shoots made it worth it to me. I felt the pressure of an assignment and need to get the shot. I had an opportunity to work with professional models under guidance of pro Photogs. (one of the instructors had shot at past Olympics and still sells his fencing shots) So for me the forced self-examination was worth the $150.

If they offered the same exact curriculum next year I don't think I would go. If they maybe offered a photo walk somewhere I would not go otherwise with or without models I might. I also had hoped they would offer more detailed portfolio exam or looking the results of the shoot - I would pay more. Just looking at a few hand-picked from the mass was not so helpful. Better they separated the 15 intermediates from the newbies.

Of course my wife has family in Mpls so the wife acceptance factor helps the decision.

So I liked the model shooting but I learned I don't want to shoot models. One career choice gone.

Thanks for making me examine what happened; it was useful to me and I hope informative to you. Assuming you didn't nod off three paragraphs ago.
