:-) !!

I think you might say something similar about landscape or street
shooting if you were only allowed to shoot what the teacher positioned
you in front of and pointed you at. Especially if you only got to
shoot after a dozen other more junior students went first.

I have only attended workshops with no more than 3 students and a
teacher/mentor and really enjoyed them for the intimate dynamic.
Although in one case I was the obvious slow newbie and that was likely
inhibiting to the other two attendees. :-)

It's so much different when you call the shots yourself. If you direct
the model, position the lights and take the shot, you get complete
feedback. If you're at all like me, you are happier when you are in
control. Or at least feel like you are. I like to have a hand in
choosing wardrobe and even the models.

If you ever get a chance, plan a small shoot with a friend who will
play model and learn on your own. It will teach you a lot more. I'm
not saying workshops aren't good -- they are great -- but some people
aren't cut out for learning in large groups. I know I'm not.
