The price for what you get between Mac and Windows boxes isn't nearly as great
as it used to be. The problem is that it just isn't worth Apple's time to make
a desktop box that costs less than $3,000, and I'd really like to be able to
cram a lot more storage in my computer, rather than having it hang off the
outside.
you seem to be referring to the Mac Pro; refurbs around $1800 right now (though
cheaper models may be available at times)

but since this model has hardly changed for a few years, i would just recommend
buying a used one; you can add a USB 3 board to them, and eSATA is as easy as
running an adapter cable from the internal SATA; i often see them in the low
1000s, sometimes under $1000
be aware they use a lot of electricity, and are large machines; you could just
buy an empty metal case and hide a Mini and a bunch of external drives inside
to get the same effect
