2 - Many young folks today *prefer* using rear-panel LCDs and *don't
want* a regular viewfinder.

On my Alaskan trip, every P+S'er I observed was composing via the LCD and by far the DSLR was in the minority. Most of the passengers appeared to be in their late 40's and older. On the ship, which was billed as a photo enhanced tour, most of the 62 passengers either used an I Phone or P+S camera to capture images. Maybe 10 DSLRs were noticed.

a $2800 p&s with no VF and fixed lens is a colossal waste of money, in
my myopic opinion.

Personally, I'm in complete greement, but I'll point out two things:
1 - Rumor mill says optional electronic and optical viewfinders coming
2 - Many young folks today *prefer* using rear-panel LCDs and *don't
want* a regular viewfinder.
