The solution is a sturdy tripod and focusing cloth...

Working from the rear lcd only is for people who don't manually focus
obviously. Its ok for composition in subdued light, but that's about it.

a $2800 p&s with no VF and fixed lens is a colossal waste of money, in

Well, let's have a look. Some say that 35mm is THE focal length. Some
other
people say that Carl Zeiss T* is THE optics. Compare it with the
alternatives you have now:

* Monstrous FF DSLR with similar lens - modern offering well above 5
grand.
* Leica M9 with a similar lens - you will cross into the five digits realm
easily, sir.

So, there will be sufficiently many people who might wanna say that this
is
THE camera for them at rather bargain price...

I pray you look at the bright side of life here, Doug.
Absolutely. Because you'll have to hold this away from you like a
dirty diaper, the resulting camera shake blur in your shots will mask
any focus problems you'll have. So it's all good!

I just can't wait for viewfinders to be (re-)invented in about 15
years and heralded as a an astounding image quality breakthrough.

Don't lose heart, they might want to cut it out, and they'll want to avoid a
lengthly search.
