I had a feeling that would be the case. I do web work and know how you
can often "recycle" code and miss stuff that gets inappropriately
carried across. In this case, I suspect that when HDR Efex Pro 2 was
released, Nik sent people who had JUST purchased the previous version
(like within the last 60-90 days < pure guess) to upgrade for free
rather than hit them up for more money so quickly after their original
purchase. The Google + Nik guy took that email code and changed the
image used in the header, but forgot about the ALT attribute in the
image tag. As someone correctly noted earlier, you only see that:
a) if you read it before the image loads (it serves a placeholder
descriptive text)
b) you mouseover the image and read it in a tooltip box that pops up
on your screen
or
c) you are sight impaired and use an audio "reader". It is the text
that gets read to you that should in some way describe the image you
can't see (assuming the designer is concerned about "accessibility
issues").
While I knew it (the "you qualify for free software statement") was
probably an error in this email, I also knew that it was an error that
they would probably have to honor. I figured that a low enough
percentage of people would notice it, or take the necessary action to
benefit from it that it would not be that costly for them (expecially
as compared to the negative attention that refusing to honor it might
bring them). Also, they could afford it. Finally, it helps them in the
long run because every user of software (no matter how it is obtained,
including illegally) becomes a future upgrade customer and thus part
of the companies future revenue stream.
I just didn't want to keep the news to myself, and so shared it with
the class. Glad to hear that those who were interested enough were
able to take advantage of the offer.
: )
I wonder if they will consider themselves bound to honor the statement
for me, since I had to search the web page source code to find it?
