The K20D or for that matter any previous Pentaprism Pentax DSLR compares quite favorably with the viewfinder in the MZ3 XZ-5[n] cameras, If you use the eyecup magnifier, in my experience. In my opinion "High Eyepoint" = "Less expensive optics", so the manufacture can either add other features, such as a built in diopter adjustment, or sell at a lower price point, or both. Maybe even build in a bit more profit.

Because for some reason it is. Manufacturers say they are meant for providing longer eyepoint, useful to spectacle-wearers.
Anyway, just compare MX/LX with ZX-5/PZ-1.

Secondly, why do you feel an FF AF camera viewfinder must be smaller than a
FF manual focus viewfinder?

Bear in mind that an AF camera, even FF, won't have such a big screen
as an LX, MX, etc. I hear a lot of yearning for a Pentax FF "just for
the viewfinder" and I have to wonder if those people have looked
through the viewfinder of a FF DSLR. I've compared the Nikon D700's
viewfinder to that of my K10D with accessory 1.17x diopter magnifier,
and the difference was not huge; certainly not a big enough
improvement to justify the expense of moving to FF just for it.

Now, the 645D's viewfinder...now THAT would definitely be an
improvement; it was like looking at a movie theater screen right
inside your camera :-)

Cheers,

  -M.

agreed, but a good screen helps. One of the big reasons I want a full

DSLR from pentax is to get back one of those big full size bright
viewfinders like on their film cameras.

First thing I did when I bought my istDS 6 years ago was to replace the
stock focus screen. I went with a generic chinese split image screen. It makes manual focussing a pleasure compared to stock and highly recommended
for anyone using manual focus lenses.

One of the (many) things that prompted me to go back to film was the
horrific experience of trying to focus through the tiny dull viewfinder of
a
digital SLR.

Don't lose heart, they might want to cut it out, and they'll want to avoid a
