Unless you are talking about photographing a moving target, I find your 
difficulty with Live View hard to believe.  Did you hit the info button to zoom 
in tighter on the point of critical focus?   

Since live view is giving you the image right off the sensor, there is nothing 
to calibrate, it is exactly what the image will be.  In low light, I find it to 
be the absolute most accurate way of focusing.
