My FAJ 18-35 does this. It's noticeably sloppier than the 18-55 kit
lens, and gave proportionately disappointing results.

This rocking distance is less than a hair's width, right? Mine has
always done that, from new. If you push on the front, eg against the
lens hood, it clunks ever so slightly and you can see and feel
lateral movement, but it's a sub-millimeter distance. I assume it's
because plastic can't be machined to the same tolerances as aluminum
(eg Ltd lenses).

I was cleaning my 16-50 this morning and noticed an odd clicking.
It turns out that the front element, actually the whole barrel that
the front element is in, will rock back and forth a small, but
noticeable amount. Is this normal? Does this happen with other
people's lenses? I'm going to hope that since there isn't usually
lateral pressure on it that it pretty much stays centered.
