If I understand you correctly (which is not 100% certain), the front element of my DA* 16-50 exhibits similar behavior. Never noticed it before and never saw any bad image quality that I could attribute to such movements...

I must say, Larry, that when I first read the headline of the message, without the content, I thought you were going to boast about how resilient to the elements the front element is. As in "rocks, baby!"

Now, that I come to think of it, I wonder what kind of force is applied to the front element when the AF motor decides to put it to full stop. And what if the timing is such that I trip the shutter just in time for this to happen (especially in continuous shooting mode)... Can this motion actually screw a photograph?! I gather it is highly improbable but theoretically possible...

I was cleaning my 16-50 this morning and noticed an odd clicking. It
turns out that the front element, actually the whole barrel that the
front element is in, will rock back and forth a small, but noticeable
amount. Is this normal? Does this happen with other people's lenses?
I'm going to hope that since there isn't usually lateral pressure on
it that it pretty much stays centered. -- Larry Colen [email protected]
