however for William's specific purpose, the disadvantage of the AppleTV
is that you'll have to convert audio from the optical or HDMI outputs to
get it into vintage gear; Airport Express has a built-in DAC, so the
cabling is easy but it''s not a premium DAC; Apple TV is also not a wifi
repeater like Airport Express (i have both, and switched to using the
AppleTV for audio as well as video)

the streaming protocol for both Airport Express and Apple TV is Apple
Lossless; max for Apple TV 2 & 3 is 16-bit, 48kHz

The bigger disadvantage is that I have nothing Apple in my house and don't intend to. I suspect I will either bluetooth something, or else figure out how to get my old XP box hooked up to the stereo (may have to buy a card, no biggie), and then see if I can get it networked to my Win7 box (Win7 doesn't seem to play nice with XP that way).

BTW, thanks to everyone for their suggestions, I appreciate the help.
