For anyone interested in this sort of thing a great way of seeing how
it's done is among the bonus features on the DVD of WALL•E (brilliant
film, btw). The sound design was done by Ben Burtt, the acknowledged
master of the art. The DVD has a bonus feature about how the various
sounds were made and recorded. Fascinating and fun.
