Thanks for the report Zos. The pushback you've received from some on the PDML
over some of your comments reflects the broader Pentax-Richo problem: not every
Pentax user or potential user has the same goals in mind. For example your
comments about long lenses ["Why not get a 300 f4 and use a teleconvertor? "]
misses the minor detail that Pentax has not produced a teleconvertor in over 20
years, closer to 30 years IIRC. If you are dong studio or street, you probably
hadn't noticed and it couldn't matter to you. But there are those to whom it
does matter. Pentax cannot grow and develop if they do not address the needs of
the pro as well as amateur, the birder as well as the street shooter, the
serious photographer as well as the teenny-bopper moving up from a mobile
phone, etc. Many current Pentax users in many disparate areas have their own
unique wish-list: teleconverters, decent flash equipment, robust buffering for
extended continuous shooting, faster more reliable auto-focus, fast long
lenses, etc. It is unlikely that anyone will want/need all of this, but it is
likely that every one of these items is eagerly if not desperately sought by
some segment of the Pentax community. Pentax currently does well with respect
to image quality, low-EV image quality, and small size without losing
reliability/strength. In all other respects the product is adequate but not
exciting. To be 5th in the world or 3rd in the world, to even get noticed!
Pentax needs to go from doing not much of anything very well to doing
everything exceptionally well. We'll see. Meanwhile, if Pentax will give me
1.4x, 1.7x, and 2.0x teleconvertors optically matched with and optimized for my
DA300/4.0, I'll be mollified for a while.
