Now SHE means business! Nobody better get in her way.

As a race official, and occasional race spectator, I've seen thousands upon
thousands of racers. I got so I could glance at a bunch of riders in the middle
of a pack and tell you with fair accuracy which ones were loafing along, just
keeping the pace, which ones were working hard to stay with the group, and
which ones were thinking about putting the hammer down and trying to move up.
All of which was particularly useful on the last couple of laps in a race. Some
of the clues are in facial expression, some in the hand position, some in the
shoulder forward-tilt (riders tend to tighten their grip when they are about to
accelerate, using their arms and shoulder muscles to hold themselves in the
seat, counterbalancing the force of their legs). And of course some came from
just knowing many of the riders and their style and race strategies. It was a
fun puzzle to try and solve, something to keep me awake and somewhat alert.

In Leah's case, I am reacting in part to her facial expression and the effort
it shows, in part to the apparent speed. Plus she is leaning into a turn. Shane
looked relaxed, just moving along with traffic, not working hard . . . In any
case, this is another nice photo!
