I found that surprising as well. My DA* 50-135 focuses fine with the modeling

Why not use the features that the camera provides? Other than the features don't work properly on this brand, but work just fine on another one. FFS, I watched a photographer using AF with an f/2.8 zoom on a Nikon D7K with no problems, but under the same light my 2 stop faster 55/1.4 wouldn't give accurate AF (nor would it give consistently inaccurate AF which could be dialed in with AF bias).
