FYI: when I finally tire of repeatedly repairing my present one I plan
to get the Bodum Bistro, $95 at Amazon. Very highly recommended as the
best inexpensive one that's available.

I agree, but I try to avoid any soft plastic coming in contact with
hot foods, eg coffee. Those cheap plastic drip cones tend to
accumulate oils that go rancid after a while. I do keep one for
emergencies though.

Recently I got a cool Japanese ceramic cone, the Hario V60. It makes
great coffee, better than from the Melitta drip cone thingies when
used correctly. It takes special conical paper filters but I found
that my cheap Melitta 02 filters could be given a single fold to get
the right shape. It takes a little longer to make coffee with it if
you completely follow the directions, but not too much longer and it
is worth it. Plus you are using gear that you can make _completely_
clean, and that's a major part of getting good coffee with no bitter
flavours.

Yeah, I know. It bugs me too, but with presses there's close to zero choice. :-(

Ah, yeah. I have a Bodum updated design of one of those. It makes
awesome coffee but takes forever and is a chore to clean. Haven't used
it in many years, but I should really get it out again.

I have a small stainless steel stovetop espresson unit as well that I
use once in a while for a treat. It's not really espresso that I get
from it, but I like what it makes anyway.
