You should have some film tails lying around...the little left over pieces you cut off 
the leader when you're loading reels. You just need an inch or 2 of film.

Take that piece of film, dunk it in the fixer you plan to use, and take a peek at your 
timer.  Swish it around a bit. In a minute or 2 it'll turn clear. Take another peek at 
your 
timer...that's your clearing time. Multiply your clearing time times 2 to get your 
fixing time.

Some folks, me included, recommend 3 times the clearing time.

So, if you take your film tail, swish it around the fixer and it clears out in 1 
minute, then you'd use 2 minutes as your fixing time, 3 if you do the 3x method.

You just need to do this once to figure out your fixing time, not each time you 
develop. 

If you reuse your fixer you might want to do some further testing to see how much your 
fixing times increase with each batch.

This varies a bit by film and fixer brand.
