Ann I believe you should set it to 50 for 50mm the software will do the math. For a zoom try to use the middle or the focal length you expect to use. Also when you have it focus by hand, it will give you the in-focus indicator even on a manual lens. Sort of like one of those eye tests they give you at the optometrist.

If the lens is an "A" you can use the k-5 dial to change the aperture, if not you have to set the lens aperture by hand on the lens. When I use this type of lens I put the camera in aperture priority and get pretty good exposures.

I don't know about the 28mm. I have one somewhere but my K-5 is at home.

Focusing manual lens takes some practice for sure; the viewfinder on digital was not made for focusing. I was comparing two manual 135's yesterday and seem to under-focus mostly. But the old glass does have a look to it (color contrast?).

I finally figured that out... however... the lens I put on is a 50mm
physically, but that means on a digital camera what you see is something
like , um what? 80?

I had a lot of trouble keeping things sharp -

Now - the 50mm I used has an A on the barrel - that is, you can set it
on A. The 28mm I have does not, and when I put THAT on the K-5 even
with M set on both focus and mode nothing happened. Couldnt use it on
the IstD either..

Anyone know if it is out of the question ? I couldnt find anything in
the manual "attach a proper lens" didn't help much:-)

It was sheer luck, it appears, that I had anything in focus at all
