On an APS-C format a 50mm lens is a short telephoto, (basically portrait, roughly the same angle of view as a 75mm lens would be on 35mm film), length lens. It's still a 50mm lens however.

Great subject choice as always (even the cat). I looked at the exif and
it appears that you didn't tell the K-5 the focal length of your manual
lens & that might make a difference to the SR.

I finally figured that out... however... the lens I put on is a 50mm physically, but that means on a digital camera what you see is something like , um what? 80?

I had a lot of trouble keeping things sharp -

Now - the 50mm I used has an A on the barrel - that is, you can set it on A. The 28mm I have does not, and when I put THAT on the K-5 even with M set on both focus and mode nothing happened. Couldnt use it on the IstD either..

Anyone know if it is out of the question ? I couldnt find anything in the manual "attach a proper lens" didn't help much :-)

It was sheer luck, it appears, that I had anything in focus at all

I have not used many manual focus lenses on my K-5. For me they work
better on K-1 because it allows focus peaking but then I still have my
cataracts.

I went out this evening near dusk for these - it just started to rain.
I wanted to check out the K-5 with a manual lens... if only I could
focus faster I'd have had a lot more respectable shots..
But I like these three - 2 street shots, and one kitty.. (not Ashley

The lens was the smc Pentax-A 50mm f1.4 that I've had since the early
80's. It seems to me there is lots more light coming into the good ole
manual than the DA 18-55.
