No direct response, but during the run-up to my Alaska trip, someone sent
this URL:

which gives a lot of general advice.  The critical point is buried near
the end: your tripod weight must be somewhere between one and 1.5x of
your total camera weight (camera plus lens).  Otherwise there just isn't
enough stability.
