i use the high-speed sync function with the K-5 and AF 540. It works well at close range. I find it most useful when shooting in daylight where the sun direction can't be managed. True sync enables a more powerful flash burst I believe, but the high speed option on the AF 540 works well. Plus, it can be left turned on, as the flash will revert to normal operation when the shutter speed drops to 1/180th or less.
