If you've got better than this Ken, you should show us.

Didn't mean to sound adversarial Bob, but I saw what I'd say was flare and wondered what you thought.

I don't have any thing better because I'd try never to shoot into the sun like that.

Steve,
I can't do the comparison to the DA15/4 Limited. Were you talking
about the SMC A15/4?
In any case to answer Ken, I suppose that is flare or some such around the sun.
Personally, I'm quite happy as none of my similar photos with the sun
in frame show anything worse.
No little dancing apertures parading across the photo like Bill
alluded to or veiling flare.
They have really started to bug me in movies and videos.
If you've got better than this Ken, you should show us.
Regards, Bob S.

Here is a recent shot with the K-3 and new HD DA 15/4 Limited

I liked the detail and how flare was under control with the sun in the
image.

alluring scene; yes, there is a slight violet flare (and some CA in the
branches), but it's far better than most lenses can do

i'm curious what aperture that was shot at; i often shoot into the sun with
my SMC 15/4 and get good results; as pointed out to me by Alex, this test
suggests that HD and SMC versions of this particular lens have almost the
same flare characteristics and the major difference is due to the blades
(see the starburst):

however that is a night shot and i'd like to see a side-by side shot like
yours, of the SMC and HD 15mm in daylight too see whether HD improves
contrast substantially; that might be more important to me than the
starburst
