Hi,
Feininger (THE photographer) used to recommend double tripod for
long lenses... made from two additional tripod legs attached to the
cups of two normal tripod legs, the whole contraption supporting in
two places a long metal bar, on which the camera+lens was attached.

The point is, if you attach a camera to tripod in one point, in the
middle, the camera's mirror & shutter will act like a pendulum, giving you
more vibration of the whole rig at the points it matters most
(front and rear end of rig).

Now, Manfroto and others make such contraptions too but they are
way too small. The Feininger's one is still THE BEST. BTW, for what
he needed it - he did a lot of LARGE FORMAT telephotography, with
looooong lenses. It's not only matter of camera shake but securing
   against wind induced vibrations too.

See his book "High school of photography"

If there is interest, I may scan the relevant images of his rig and
text and put it temporarily on website.

Good light,
   Frantisek Vlcek
