Get a cheap USB housing for a SATA drive & use it as external storage.
Something like:

Install a copy of MacDrive on the PC & you probably wouldn't even have
to reformat the drive.

I have an update.
I haven't tried the G5 again since the last time I posted as I
decided it was getting a bit futile.
Instead I had a brainwave and ended up ordering a cheap Firewire card
for my ancient PC - the one that the G5 replaced! It's scanning a
slide right now. The card cost me $25 including shipping so I'm a
happy camper. I didn't even have to upgrade the OS - it's all
running happily under Windows ME(!).
So my current plan is to sell the G5 for parts... after I come up
with a way to scrub the hard drives as I don't have anything else
with a SATA plug.
Cheers, Dave

Hi all,
I started up my old G5 to do some slide scanning today but it seems
to be on the blink. At first I had some strange problems
communicating with the scanner but it came right and I got a couple
of scans done.
